History of the Faculty
The Faculty of Pedagogy “St. KlimentOhridski” was founded in 1995. The first generation of students attending four year studies enrolled in the school year 1995/96. Dear students and interested parties, in this occasion we would like to offer a short retrospect of the training of the teaching staff in the past. This way, we want tolet you know that our Faculty and its mission are based on a long tradition, dating back to Kliment’s educational work in his school in Ohrid, known as the first Slavonic University that had about 3500 students. We also carry on the tradition of the Vocational School of Pedagogy “KlimentOhridski” – Skopje, opened following a Statute of the Government of the People’s Republic of Macedonia in 1947. In the beginning, the Vocational School of Pedagogy had five study groups. As time passed by, the number of study groups increased, and in 1952 there were 13 study groups, including the study groups in Albanian and Turkish language of instruction. The number increased to 17 in 1953. This number changed in the years that followed, depending on the interest for studying and the social needs.
According to the Law for Higher Educationpassed in 1961, the Vocational School of Pedagogy transformed into an Academy of Pedagogy, in which a department for elementary education was opened alongside the existing one for upper grades. Around 13000 students have graduated since the founding of the School of Pedagogy in 1947until the beginning of work of the Faculty of Pedagogy in 1995. Instruction was carried out in Macedonian, Albanian and Turkish.
Today, the Faculty of Pedagogy “St. KlimentOhridski” is part of the University “Ss. Cyril and Methodius” – Skopje. It is a modern educational-academic institution keeping pace with the modern accomplishments in the academic disciplines as well as the methodologies that are relevant for the training of preschool and elementary school teachers.
We constantly strive to develop syllabi and improve the work conditions. The Faculty started working in the school year 1995/96 following a curriculum and a syllabus adopted by the Founding Committee. We implemented new syllabi according to the European credit transfer system in the school year 2004/05. The study program includes obligatory, elective and facultative subjects. In this period, we, as professors, together with our students acquired experience in all segments of this system. We also made some changes in the syllabus of some subjects. In the school year 2010/2011, the instruction was conducted according to the new syllabi accredited by the Accreditation Committee.
The academic work of The Faculty of Pedagogy includes three academic groups (departments):
- Elementary education
- Preschool education
- Library studies
The instruction in the departments for elementary education and preschool education is conducted in Macedonian, Albanian and Turkish. The instruction at our faculty is carried not only by professors and assistants from our Faculty, but also by professors from other faculties that collaborate with us.
The Department of Librarianship was introduced in the school year 2010/2011.
In the school year 2010/2011, the second cycle studies (Master’s studies) were also introduced with Macedonian, Albanian and Turkish language of instruction. We are currently working on introducing the second cycle of Library studies.
From the school year 2013/2014, we started implementing the study and subject programs for the first and second cycles of study, which have been adjusted to the changes in the Law for University education, accredited by the Accreditation Committee.
We began the third cycle studies – the doctoral studies together with the Faculty of Philosophy.
In December, 2016, we were accredited to independently organize and conduct doctoral studies for primary school teachers.
Our Faculty has international collaboration with faculties and educational association. We organize and take part in many international conferences. We also take part in international projects. We conduct instruction and engage in academic research work through research projects in the area of education, as well as projects financed by the University “Ss. Cyril and Methodius” – Skopje.
The professors, students, assistants, all employees at the Faculty, our collaborators from other faculties have a good cooperation among themselves and successfully implement the planned content for training Preschool and Elementary school teachers, thus continuing the noble mission of the Faculty of Pedagogy “St. Kliment Ohridski”.
